ZINIO TO EXTEND DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION OF GLOBAL MAGAZINES TO JAPAN
SAN FRANCISCO – December 15, 2010 – Zinio, the leader in digital-publishing technology and services, today announced that it is extending its digital distribution of global magazines to Japan. Zinio focuses on multi device, digital-reading adoption for consumers and publishers in Japan.
The introduction of this service in Japan will expand the pay-once-read-anywhere ZINIO UNITY™ reading platform. This approach offers the unique benefit of letting readers pay once for a magazine subscription or single issue, then enjoy that publication across platforms and devices like their Windows, Mac and Linux based computers, iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, and in the future on a variety of Android powered devices.
With the introduction of digital reading devices and multi-task PCs and tablets, digital reading is exploding. According to a recent report conducted by the Harrison Group, 58% of digital reading device owners are reading “more digital content than they ever thought they would.”
“Japan is an important magazine publishing and advertising market,” said Rich Maggiotto, President & CEO, Zinio. “Opening up Japanese content globally and allowing for publishers worldwide to reach a digitally-savvy Japanese audience via our global platform is a natural extension of our growing global business.”
In order to expand its service to Japan, Zinio is starting a business collaboration with Sony Corporation (Sony), whereby Zinio will create localized Japanese products and services across Zinio UNITY™, and Sony will work with Japanese publishers to aggregate, market, promote digital publications in Japan. This is an extension of its existing relationship with Sony, where Zinio’s homepage is bookmarked across Sony’s VAIO PCs in some European and Asian countries. Sony and Zinio will work together to continuously introduce usability and feature enhancements that suits Japanese customers' tastes.
“Sony is always looking to offer its customers with compelling services across its rich hardware lineup including VAIO PCs.” said Hideyuki Furumi, Deputy President, VAIO & Mobile Business Group, Networked Products & Services Group, Sony Corporation. “We share a vision with Zinio to provide graphic rich dynamic content to Japanese customers.”
“We have high expectations for Zinio's grand service launch in Japan. We believe that Zinio’s service offers enjoyment through a variety of new reading experiences. We feel that Zinio will help contribute to the development of the digital publishing market in Japan.” said Kunio Miyatake, General Manager, Internet Strategy & Business Development Division, Shogakukan Inc.
“We are interested in creating interactive versions of digital magazines on Zinio’s service which appeal to consumers. We hope that collaboration between media industry players and network service providers, helps grow the digital publishing market.” said Toru Watanabe, Editor in chief, The Weekly Magazine SPA!, FUSOSHA Publishing Inc.
“We are delighted to start offering our colorful and graphic-rich digital publishing titles. We also look forward to reaching potential readers beyond the domestic market through Zinio's international stores.” said Ken Nemoto, Executive Managing Director, Ei Publishing Co., Ltd.
